The Spanish healthcare system is based on contributions, not residence as in the UK. For you or your family to be covered, you need to have paid into the local social security scheme, you can do this by working on contract for an employer or directly as a self-employed worker. You may also be eligible to pay voluntary contributions if you have paid into an EU system for at least 3 out of the 12 years. For those residents who aren’t working, you may also be eligible for state healthcare with the following: E106 form if you have retired early and been resident in Spain for less than two years E121 form if you are receiving a UK state pension, long term incapacity or bereavement benefit The local social security office is based in Arrecife, their address and contact details are:
C/ León y Castillo 85, Arrecife, 35500. Telephone: 928 824 911 The office is situated next to the hospital and diagonally across from the Hiperdino Supermarket (further down the same road as Ikea and Trafico) and open from 9am to 2pm. NB. You are only entitled to health care in any one country, if you want to register in Spain you must tell your GP in the UK and likewise if moving back from Spain to the UK you must de-register here first. E106 Form The E106 for can be issued for two reasons, either you’ve been posted to work abroad but will continue to pay National Insurance in the UK or you've retired early and living in Spain. If you’re still working then the HM Revenue & Customs office at Newcastle issue the form (Tel: 0845 915 4811 / 0044 191 203 7010), if you’ve retired early then the DWP International Pension Centre at Newcastle raise the form (Tel: 0044 191 218 1999). The form will cover you for a specified length of time according to your contributions, typically up to two years. To register your E106 you need to take the original and copy of the following documents to the TGSS office: Certificado de Residencia Certificado de Empadronamiento Passport E106 form The Seguridad Social office should keep one copy of your E106 and return the other one to you stamped. This copy entitles you to the health care system until the expiration date. Take the same documents above with you to your local Centro de Salud to register with the local doctor. E121 Form The E121 will give you, your spouse and dependants (make sure you add them) the same medical cover as a Spanish national, there are some differences to the UK so you may pay for some treatment such as dentistry. To register your E121 form take the following documents (original and copy) to the TGSS office: Certificado de Residencia Certificado de Empadronamiento Passport E121 form The Seguridad Social office will keep both copies of your E121 form but issue you with a document ‘acreditivo del derecho a la asistencia sanitaria’. Take all of the above documents with you to your local Centro de Salud, they will register your details and issue a Tarjeta Sanitaria which proves your entitlement to local health care and should be shown at the surgery and hospital prior to treatment.
