We were so proud to be part of Kenneth Gasque’s new event the Ocean lava Triathlon which took place in Lanzarote on Sunday 5th September 2010. As you know Mike and I like to participate as volunteers through the year, we get so much more out of this than a free t-shirt, and Estupendo was also one of the sponsors of the event, appearing in publicity material everywhere. Sunday’s event was no exception, we met some fantastic people within the volunteers & athletes participating and have made some new friends.
There were 147 individuals and 16 teams signed up for the event which was won by two Belgium athletes – Bert Jammaer 4:15:59 and Veerle D’Haese 5:04:44. Unfortunately Ben from our Playa Blanca office couldn’t participate but two of his team mates from Triyaiza did - Mark Thorn came 6th with a time of 4:15:59 and Maximiliano Valero Padilla 39th with 5:29:45. Mark was really pleased with his position, earlier this year he broke his shoulder in a cycling accident which took him out of the Ironman 2010 race but said that the injury had allowed him to concentrate on training for this half distance event and he was delighted with his time, it was just a shame the prize money stopped at 5th place! The athletes were saying that the bike course although half the distance of an Ironman event was tough, the climb from El Golfo to Femés is a killer and strangely enough because it was half the distance that made the marathon section harder. The event was a huge success and for sure next year’s will be much bigger. For more information please visit Ocean Lava Events. |
