The Colegio Europeo Daos school is modern, purpose built and very impressive. Situated in between Matagorda and Los Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen it’s easy to find. The school is completely secure with an electronic entry system and takes children from 3 months old to primary school age. This is a legal Spanish school following the Spanish curriculum but with a high level of additional work in English and German, even the babies have interaction in English, Spanish and German! Daos was founded 14 years ago offering nursery and pre school places in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Guime. It still has the nurseries in Costa Teguise which take babies up to 2 years old and in Playa Blanca that take children up to pre school at 4 years old but the main centre opened as a school 3 years ago and has major plans for development including a secondary school, indoor swimming pool and theatre. The school has strong principles on social behaviour; the children were relaxed and greeted me in 3 languages when we peeked into each of the classrooms. The rooms are well organised, they have display boards at the back of the room (one for each language) and three sections at the front again one for each language so they can swap books and materials when they change languages. The teachers rotate around the classes; the school feel that it is very important for the German teacher to be German, the English teacher, English etc. There is also a music room, very well equipped computer room, art room and library. Everything is labelled in the three languages for the pupils. There are two lovely dining rooms for the children and teachers to share and the food smelt delicious there is a very good chef who used to work in a hotel and they incorporate meals from the three countries. With this school the welfare of the children come first, they are continually developing the school, for example, recently they had the outside areas treated with a non slip surface and a roof added to the patio because of the wetter winter conditions this year. The pupils have been on some fabulous trips around the island such as sailing in Playa Blanca, taking part in the Arrecife carnaval, swimming and golf days. They celebrate fiestas and traditions from UK and Germany as well as the local Spanish ones, such as Halloween, pancake day and a teddy bears picnic. Outside there is a kitchen garden, sports area with track and nets for basketball and football and a children’s play area. The school loves to put on shows and theatre productions, hence the plans to build one on site for the school. There is a uniform for all, the babies, staff and pupils. The girls wear plaid skirts and the boys have long shorts with polo shirts and sweater and there is a tracksuit and shorts for P.E all of which are available direct from the school. Places especially for three year olds are in demand; it is recommended that your child attend the nursery to secure their place in the primary school class as they are offered here first, then to the other two nurseries in Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca and then to the general public. The school’s high standard of education mean that they can include exams from the University of Cambridge, the course in 2007-2008 had a 100% pass rate. The school is open from 7am to 5pm and classes are from 9am and 4.30pm. For more information please contact Janet Edwards.
