The female cochineal insect is imobile and feeds off the prickly pear cactus, once fertilised she will give birth to nymphs who are protected from water and sun by a waxy white coating. The insects are harvested at about 3 months old, they have to be picked off the cactus and placed in bags ready for drying to produce the bright red dye.  |
