One of the best loved, most popular, most authentic Spanish tapas bars in La Villa de Teguise. So, how come it is run by a Dutchman and his wife!
The answer is love and respect. Freddy and Marjo Broekhuijsen celebrate the traditional Spanish love affair with tapas, an exciting and varied array of food, supported by excellent Spanish drinks.
It was in August 2008 that Henny, a Dutch lady who owns a craft shop in La Villa de Teguise came to the Estupendo office to discuss with Estupendo the new Se Vende sign over the traditional, but somewhat run down Bodeguita Del Medio in one of the main squares in the town.
Henny advised us to contact her brother inlaw, Freddy Broekhuijsen, who, she was sure, would be interested in buying La Bodeguita. That was the start of an international relationship between Estupendo and Freddy, fuelled by multiple phone calls, and a shared love of Ernest Hemmingway, that led Freddy and his wife Marjo to abandon their life in Holland, and purchase La Bodeguita, sight unseen, after exhaustive checks and reassurances about the quality of the building, the various licences, the minute detail of the rental contract, and the potential for improved trade.
In the months between August and November, when the Contract was completed and all the possible hitches and details of the Contract were ironed out, it was still a heartstopping moment when Freddy first walked into his new life.
Fortunately, it was a marriage made in heaven, and that first smile on Freddys face has not been replaced.
Since then La Bodeguita Del Medio has gone from strength to strength. Freddy and Marjo celebrate the Spanish love of tapas with a range of excellent and traditional dishes, many served with a contemporary twist. Their levels of service are second to none, and they reach out to a whole new audience with their multi lingual abilities, and welcoming attitudes.
La Bodeguita Del Medio. A welcoming destination in the heart of La Villa de Teguise, and a continuing success story for us as relocation specialists. Freddy called into our offices in Costa Teguise the other day to say that the La Bodequita del Medio has recently been featured in the Spanair inflight magazine in an article about Lanzarote, the feature can be viewed on page 22 of the following link: http://www.spanair.com/web/en-gb/About-Spanair/Spanorama/
