Islas Canarias Airport Taxes

Airport taxes in the Canary Islands will continue to be waived into 2012 to assist in the recovery of the tourist sector. As Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the President of the Spanish Government, assured that the duties normally paid by airlines to land at Spanish airports, will continue to be suspended in the Canary archipelago next year.

The taxes have not been applied to flights landing since the beginning of 2010, as part of an agreement with several low cost carriers to extend their routes across the islands. In particular, the budget airline Ryanair only agreed to expand its services in 2010 as long as AENA, the Spanish Airport Authority, maintained the waiver on airport taxes.

This measure has met with success in boosting passenger numbers to the major airports over the last two years. For example, the number of arrivals at Arrecife airport has increased by 15% since the introduction of the waiver. A view supported by AENA´s passenger number statistics for this period.

Ryanair has greatly increased their commitment to the Islands with the expansion of services and the creation of new hubs and bases.

Midsummer Night Celebrations

The celebration of Midsummer on the Night of San Juan goes back to ancient traditions of the ‘Guanches’.

Each municipality throughout the Canary Islands celebrates its particular rituals on this day, 23rd June 2011.

Always around the fire and often on the beach, where parties are held with spectacular bonfires.

Could be interesting this year with the high temperatures we are experiencing.

High Temperature Alert for the Canary Isles

The Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has raised the alert level to ‘orange’ for high temperatures in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, until 17.00 today, Monday 20th June 2011, for temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. The south of Gran Canaria’s ‘yellow’ warning remains for temperatures up to 34 degrees.

Tomorrow 21st June 2011, the ‘orange’ warning also extends to the south of Gran Canaria with temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius, from 11.00 to 17.00. In the south of Tenerife, La Gomera and Gran Canaria there will be peaks of up to 34 degrees, which is currently on ‘yellow’ alert.

Thursday the warning level for Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, south and center of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, La Gomera and south west of La Palma and El Hierro will be ‘yellow’.

High temperatures will be accompanied by airborne dust.

Remember to drink plenty.

Lanzarote Wine Run - 19 Jun 2011 - Win Your Weight In Wine!

21 K Run: A unique running event in the wine district of La Geria; Compete & sample the delicious local wines along the route in some of the planet’s most extraordinary scenery.

Course Description - La Geria, located in the heart of Lanzarote between the towns of Mozaga and Yaiza, is the source of Malmsey, a robust sweet wine, known locally by the name of its grape, Malvasia. In the early 1700s, the valley was farmland, but in 1730 a six-year period of volcanic eruptions covered southern Lanzarote with thick layers of ash and lava. When farmers returned to their blackened fields, they quickly discovered a use for the tiny black cinders and developed a method of growing vines on volcanic slopes by surrounding each plant with picón (lava gravel) to trap the dew, and sheltering it with a zoco, a semicircle of stone walls. La Geria valley is today covered in a pattern of these round depressions and zocos, where visitors can sample and buy the wines from the local “bodegas”, and learn about their unusual history at a wine museum.

Course description – 21.1 K - The start will be at Los Dolores Church in Mancha Blanca (TBC). The run course will take the participants on different types of surfaces through the vineyards in the La Geria region. In this area the runners will be offered free samples of the wine produced by the local “bodegas”. The finish line will be in La Geria district between ‘La Geria’ and ‘Rubicon’ vineyards. (TBC) Time limit: 4 hours

Aid Station - There will be several aid stations supplying you with water and samples of the wine produced by the local “bodegas”.

Entry fee: €30 + €25 deposit for the timing chip. €10 for the Wine Walk.

A Place In The Sun - Canaries Calling

place in the sun (1)

A Place in the sun is not only famous for its TV program but they also produce a monthly magazine which is like a bible for many people seriously looking to buy a property in the sun. Last month Puerto Del Carmen office received a call to ask for some help for their latest edition they are doing an article about "The Canary islands" and they wanted ¡Estupendo! to help with the Lanzarote part. Its always a pleasure to be asked to work with the "Place in the sun" team whether its for the TV programs or as now the magazine.

With continued troubles in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya this year has seen a change in peoples thinking about safe and settled destinations. The Canaries have seen a 20% jump in tourism on the back of these crisis and people are realizing that the Canaries really is a very safe bet. With prices now at an all time low after the recession the islands have many advantages with the main ones being the all year round sun and short flight journey of only 4 hours from the UK.

With new low cost flights from the UK and Ireland its clear to see that tourism is on its way back up and so will property prices so maybe now is the best time to think about buying that property in the sunny Canaries?

30th May is Dia de Canarias – Canary Islands day

The 30th May is ‘Dia de Canarias’ a day that the Canary Islands celebrate their day.

It is one of the most popular festivities in the Islands.

A day in which the identity of Canary Island’s people is closely felt, a date that recalls the anniversary of the setting-up of the first regional parliament.

A day in which many cultural, traditional, festive and political events take place all around the islands.

Most businesses on the islands will close to celebrate this day.

Lanzarote IronMan 21st May 2011

It is that time again where 1,500 hopeful athletes arrive to Lanzarote to take part in the toughest IronMan challenge in the world. On 21st May, starting at 7am in Puerto del Carmen, athletes first swim 3.8km, then cycle for 180km around the spectacular volcanic island, and, to finish the day off, a 42.2km marathon along the Puerto del Carmen seafront. This year I am taking part in the event raising money for Leukemia Research as a close family member was diagnosed with Leukemia at the start of 2010.

The Pro athletes will be hoping to finish the course in around 8.5 – 9hrs with the rest of us finishing anytime after that. This will be my first IronMan event so for me I will be just happy to complete the event in one piece!

I have created a fundraising page with Just Giving and hope to raise £1000 for my charity of choice. I would be amazing if you could spare a few moments and a few pounds to donate to this cause. Just click http://www.justgiving.com/Ben-Harperlanzaroteironman.

Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to seeing many of you on the day. My Race number is 213 and please cheer loudly.
